Heaton Harriers Memorial 10k

Conditions were ideal for the event this year, with the usual Town Moor wind notable by its absence.  A huge field of 472 finished this year, with the race being preceded by the one minutes silence for those, who if they had not been prepared to make the supreme sacrifice, none of us would be able to participate in events such as this.  The race was won in convincing style by Jonny Taylor of Morpeth in 30 mins 23 secs, outside his record set in 2009.  Elswick had a great turn out of runners with PAUL TURNER first home in 11th spot in 34:49, closely followed by LEE BENNETT -13th in 35:00. ANDREW HARTLEY showed a return to form finishing in 40th place in 38:06. MARTIN CROWE was 52nd in 38:45,

STEVE ROBERTSON-61ST-39:26, MARK CARPENTER-102ND-41:41, new boy

CHRIS CONWAY-115TH-41:58, DAVID JARDIN-128TH-42:34, LEE COULSON-197TH-45:01, ANDY MIDDLETON-198TH-45:02, KIM MATTHEWS-227TH-46:39,

STEVE CURRY-238TH-47:12, JANE WALLACE-252ND-48:01,

CALLUM RAILTON-263RD-48:22, ROD RICHARDSON-50:17,

JULIE RICHARDSON-310TH-50:50,JILL BENNETT-318TH-51:09,PAUL QUIGLEY-319TH-51:11, NIGEL HOLLIER-51:42, and ELIZABETH PALLISTER-453RD-64:37.

Heaton Harriers did a good job in marshalling this twisty course, and were rewarded by a huge field.

Its like Liverpool all over again!

Fantastic piece by our very own Phil Hurst, who attended the ‘Future stars with Kelly Holmes Camp’.  All part of his development into a serious athlete.

North East Harrier League - Blaydon

The promised hurricane type winds did not materialise till after the days sport, with conditions near perfect at Shibdon Ponds.

Elswick had a huge turnout throughout the age groups with two competitors in the U/11 “Try It” event with CHLOE WELLINGS-34TH, and ROBERT GRAY-35th.  The next event was the U/13 Boys race with EWAN CASSIDY finishing in a very creditable 7th spot, with JAMES POTTS-21ST, SAM COLLINS-34TH, and OLLIE HAYWARD-52ND.  Following on from this race was the U/13 Girls, with MILLIE CASSIDY recording the third fastest time in finishing 6th overall and helping the club to 3RD Team Spot.  ISABELLE RILEY was 19th, ANNA CHANNON-22ND, ROBYN BENNETT-23RD, and RACHEL ANDERSON-29TH.  In the U/15 Boys CHARLIE HOLLIDAY was 15th, and JOE WALKER-18TH. Our only representative in the U/15 Girls was JESSICA RICHARDSON who continues to consistently turn out for these events, and who finished 26th overall.  Following the Senior Mens race the U/17 Men’s saw HARRY HAYWARD claiming 17th place , with MICHAEL HALL-21ST. The Senior Mens race saw a record field of 420 finishers, with the club contributing 23 members.  GRAHAM BELL our new club captain ran well on his return to the Cross Country scene by finishing 27th, with our next counter being LEE BENNETT-59TH, and MARTIN CROWE continued his good form in 65th place.  Our fourth counter was young DANIEL BALMAIN who was 71st, and MARK McNALLY on a rare appearance on the country was 96th.  MARTIN CONNELLY after a long absence was our 6th counter in 114th spot.  OTHER FINISHERS:

IAIN HARDY-140TH, PAUL TURNER-155TH, ANDREW HARTLEY-171ST, CAMERON LAIDLAW, after an absence was 178th, GRAHAM CHAMBERS-208TH, CHRIS CONWAY-245TH, PETER SLOAN-282ND, ANDY MIDDLETON-288TH, DAVID JARDIN-297TH, STEVE KYTE-298TH, ANDREW BEYNON-345TH, LEE COULSON-356TH, ROD RICHARDSON-385TH, STEVE CURRY-390TH, NIGEL HOLLIER-400TH, and MICHAEL STODDART-417TH.  The large turnout has enabled us to hold our own in Division 1, with a mid table position, and three fixtures to go. There was also a record field in the Senior Women’s race with nine Elswick vests lining up for the start.

In the U/17/20 Women’s event PHILLIPA WILLIAMS was 4th, and REBECCA CARPENTER finished-18th. In the Seniors there was a  field of 159, with DEENA WHITE  first club athlete home in 59th, JILL BENNETT -115TH, JULIE RICHARDSON-119TH, new recruit-VIVIENNE KIRCHIN was 141st, with Leanne WELLINGS 145th, FAYE WILKINSON-148TH, and CLARE COLLINS-151ST.

Well done to everyone for their efforts for the club, and nice to round off the afternoon with a team photo, including coach COLIN BOLTON, whose encouragement is a major factor in getting so many members out to compete.  It is certainly a long, long time since so many red and white vests have been on show in the Harrier League, and hopefully we can maintain it for the remaining fixtures.
