Wednesday 4th May, Wallsend Harriers staged their Gordon Smith Memorial Relays which increases in popularity every year, with 54 teams completing the course. Morpeth Harriers were successful in both the Mens and Women's events, but were pushed to the end in the Women's race by our team of Alison, Gina and Yam.
ALISON DARGIE who ran the 1st.leg had the fastest vets lap of the night covering the 2 mile course in 11:13, she then handed over to GINA HOWORTH who recorded a fine 11:51, YAM THIRU then held on in the face of a strong challenge from the host club, running 11:57 on the final leg. Overall a fine performance. JILL BENNETT ran 15:12, KIM MATTHEWS 13:34, and JULIE RICHARDSON 14:56 for our second team. Full marks to Jill in once again getting members out to compete. The club also fielded two Mens teams with the A team finishing in a very respectable 5th place, PAUL TURNER stormed around the course on Leg 1, recording 10:11, PAUL PRIOR ran 11:01 on Leg 2, with LEE BENNETT running 10:24 on Leg 3. The B team saw the race debut for the club of JASON CLARK who ran Leg 1 in 11:37, a very promising run, handing on to HARRY MATTHEWS who ran Leg 2 in 12:04, with IAN FENWICK holding on well in the final leg 11:20, to bring the second string team home in 22nd place overall. Phil Hurst meets Dame Kelly Holmes

So I have recently had a trip down to Birmingham, to be part of the ‘Future Stars’ with Dame Kelly Holmes. I was invited last year to a similar event and found that a great experience, so I jumped at the chance to go to this one as well. The day itself was very inspirational, being that close to a double Olympic Champion is an amazing experience, but what throws you back the most is how normal and laid back she actually is. You could ask Kelly anything and she wouldn’t hesitate to answer which made me really look up to her and admire.
Earlier on in the day all the athletes that went down were set a track session which unfortunately was held in torrential rain! It didn’t stop us though as we ventured out on a 20 minute run for a warm and straight indoors for some expert tips on drills and technique. I thought I handled myself alright but a certain drill did make me look very amateur! It was ankle rolls and with my limited flexibility in the ankles I was going to struggle. But Kelly did give me a few tips on how to sort this out so the next time you see me ask me to do them and I will be better! After the drill session we did 3 by 1000m, followed up by 8 200m. Alongside Kelly Holmes was Anthony Whiteman, who is an Olympian himself and is still pretty nippy now, so he jumped in the session as well. It was hard work but I came away feeling good and even Kelly herself was shouting us on and sprinting down the last 100m to keep us going... that was cool!
As the day went on I have ended up learning bucket loads, from nutrition information
on what not to eat and what’s good before a competition and how to prepare yourself
mentally before a race. But the most important aspect that I did come away with is
one of the last topics Kelly herself brought up. An athlete’s career is not all plain
sailing with results, after results, after results. Many problems do happen and they
have to be taken care of and not put to the side. Kelly went through many problems
herself and when you look at what she’s achieved it puts into perspective how much
hard work needs to be put in and that results don’t come easy. This has set me up
for a really good season now and with Kelly’s words still ringing in my ears I will
be working solidly and non-

Good luck Mark
The club was sad to lose the services of MARK KETLEY who has represented
Elswick for over 10 years consistently, both on the roads and on the country.
Mark unfortunately due to work and family commitments has decided to join
Crook & District as he is now living near Crook, and finds it increasingly difficult to train with us. The club wishes Mark every success in the future.

George Ogle Memorial
The first running of the George Ogle Memorial Race was held on the Derwent
Walk on Monday 23rd. To say the conditions were challenging is a vast understatement. With the winds gusting up to 60 MPH, 84 brave souls braved the conditions. Elswick unfortunately had only one competitor in JONNY BOLTON, who in his first competitive outing for the club finished in a fine 8th position in 40:22. Mark Ketley narrowly failed to finish in the prizes clocking 38:28 in 4th spot. This race was held in memory of George Ogle who sadly passed away last year, and who devoted so much of his time to athletics in the North East along with his wife Audrey, and the event will hopefully be established in future years as a tribute to all the work he put into the sport over many years.

Congratulations to Elswicks Youngsters
The combined Elswick/Blaydon team are carrying all before them in the
Young Athletes League, and easily won their fixture at Monkton Stadium
On Sunday with Morpeth Harriers in second spot. If they continue their fine form they should be promoted to the Premier Division, which would be a fine achievement. Continuing on the theme of the younger athletes JESSICA RICHARDSON won the Junior Girls 200 Metres at the North Tyneside School Championships enabling her to qualify for the County Finals.
