Northern Counties Cross Country Championships
The Northern Counties Cross Country Championships were held at Herrington Country
Park on Saturday 29th. January with runners of all ages travelling from all over
the North of England. The first event of the day saw PHILLIPA CHAMBERS run well
to claim 7th spot in a time of 11.15 over 3k,with JESSICA RICHARDSON-
LEE BENNETT-
Brass Monkey & Durham Cathedral Relays
Sunday 22nd January was the date for the staging of the Brass Monkey Half Marathon
in York, with a massive field of 1561 runners finishing the course. The club had
two representatives in ANDREW HARTLEY-
The Durham Cathedral Relays were held also on the same day on the banks of the Wear, with an excellent turn out of athletes.
In the Veteran Mens Race Elswick finished 5th out of 36 teams with KEVIN STEPHENSON leading off with a time of 9.54 followed by GRAHAM BELL in 10.48, with LEE BENNETT running the final leg in 10.13. The Women's team ran really well to claim bronze medals through ALISON DARGIE who lead off the team on Leg 1 in a time of 10.56 finishing in second spot then YAM THIRU followed up with 12.00 dead on Leg 2. ASHLEY GIBSON home from the States then ran the second fastest time of the day to record 10.20 to bring the team through to third position.
In the Senior Mens event PAUL TURNER ran 9.57 on the first leg, followed by MARTIN CROWE who recorded 10.53, with IAN FENWICK running 11.14 on Leg 3, bringing the team home in 20th position.
Northern Athletics Indoor T&F Championships
PHIL HURST travelled with coach Martin Crowe to Sheffield for the Northern Athletics Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday 15th January and came away with a P.B. in the Senior Mens 3000 Metres. Phil produced a sterling performance to finish in 5th spot in a very strong field with a time of 8 Minutes 18 Sec's. This was a P.B. by a margin of 4 seconds and bodes well for the future. Overall winner was ex. Elswick man Ryan McLeod in 8:01. Phil was also first U/23 Man by a wide margin.
