Northern Counties Cross Country Championships

The Northern Counties Cross Country Championships were held at Herrington Country Park on Saturday 29th.  January with runners of all ages travelling from all over the North of England.  The first event of the day saw PHILLIPA CHAMBERS run well to claim 7th spot in a time of 11.15 over 3k,with JESSICA RICHARDSON-110TH in 13.10.  In the U/13 Boys EWAN CASSIDY was 64th-11.49.  The U/15 Boys run over 4.25k saw GREG CHAMBERS claim 18th place in 16.07 to finish 2nd.  N.E. athlete JOE WALKER was 84th-18.20, with JORDAN HESLOP-110TH-20.05.  The U/17 Women's race over 5k had three club athletes with PHILLIPA WILLIAMS-23rd-20.14, REBECCA CARPENTER-23.27, and LAUREN NEWSHAM-90th-33.51.  Our only representative in the U/17 Men was DANIEL BALMAIN-27.14-117th over 6k.  The Senior Women ran over the by now heavily churned up 8.2k course, with ALISON DARGIE-39TH-34.59, with JUDITH NUTT-69TH-37.04,and JULIE  RICHARDSON-177TH-47.48.  The final event of the day saw the Senior Mens Race with a huge field starting on the line with PAUL TURNER first home for the club in 109th spot-46.38 with other placings as follows:

LEE BENNETT-132nd-47.47 ,KEVIN STEPHENSON-133rd-47.47, GRAHAM BELL-226th-51.44, DAVID JARDIN-238th-52.14, IAN FENWICK-276th-54.17, MARK CARPENTER-284th-54.38, ANDREW HARTLEY-288TH-54.58, GRAHAM CHAMBERS-296th-55.16, PETER SLOAN-378th-59.50, STEVE KYTE-390th-60,21, TOM HANSON-409th-61.46, STEVE CURRY-422nd-63.14. There was a total of 488 finishers. I have left the best till last with the Junior Mens Race producing the clubs first Northern Champion for 18 years when the new Elswick Express-PHIL HURST led from gun to tape to decimate a very strong field to record a time of 26.51 over the 8.2 k course.  Phil grasped the nettle from the outset and it was nice to see our Olympic Silver medallist Mike McLeod on the course to cheer Phil home.  Great credit also to coach MARTIN CROWE for all the hard work he puts in to enable Phil's talent to come to fruition.  A great day for the club, finished off by rallying in the waterlogged car parks, with many thanks to the marshals who enabled the writer to eventually slalom off the field!

Brass Monkey & Durham Cathedral Relays

Sunday 22nd January was the date for the staging of the Brass Monkey Half Marathon in York, with a massive field of 1561 runners finishing the course.  The club had two representatives in ANDREW HARTLEY-1 Hour-24.33-141st, and TONY PRINCE-1 Hour 52.53 finishing in 1029th spot.

The Durham Cathedral Relays were held also on the same day on the banks of the Wear, with an excellent turn out of athletes.

In the Veteran Mens Race Elswick finished 5th out of 36 teams with KEVIN STEPHENSON leading off with a time of 9.54 followed by GRAHAM BELL in 10.48, with LEE BENNETT running the final leg in 10.13.  The Women's team ran really well to claim bronze medals through ALISON DARGIE who lead off the team on Leg 1 in a time of 10.56 finishing in second spot then YAM THIRU  followed up with 12.00 dead on Leg 2.  ASHLEY GIBSON home from the States then ran the second fastest time of the day to record 10.20 to bring the team through to third position.

In the Senior Mens event PAUL TURNER ran 9.57 on the first leg, followed by MARTIN CROWE who recorded 10.53, with IAN FENWICK running 11.14 on Leg 3, bringing the team home in 20th position.

Northern Athletics Indoor T&F Championships

PHIL HURST travelled with coach  Martin Crowe to Sheffield for the Northern Athletics Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday 15th January and came away with a P.B. in the Senior Mens 3000 Metres.  Phil produced a sterling performance to finish in 5th spot in a very strong field with a time of 8 Minutes 18 Sec's.  This was a P.B. by a margin of 4 seconds and bodes well for the future.  Overall winner was ex. Elswick man Ryan McLeod in 8:01.  Phil was also first U/23 Man by a wide margin.
