N.E. Harrier League

The 4th Harrier League is staged at Wrekenton this Saturday 11th February.  The action starts at 12.30 with the U/13 Boys, with the Senior Men off at 1.15 p.m.  Currently we are halfway up Division 1, so a good turn out on Saturday is needed.  The Women’s race is scheduled for 2.00pm.  Parking is available at Cardinal Hume School, Old Durham Road, which is just past the Q.E hospital.

Aviva Indoor Trials

Phil Hurst had another great run in the Aviva European Indoor Trials at Sheffield on Saturday posting a P.B for the 3000 Metres of 8:01:45 seconds to finish in 4th spot in a high class field, three seconds adrift of winner Johnny Mellor.  Phil was first U/23 athlete with three seniors ahead of him.  Further progress for him this season.

NEHL Wrekenton

The fourth meeting of the North East Harrier League took place at Wrekenton on a cold and overcast afternoon. In stark contrast to last year the course was frozen in most places, but the icy corners provided their own challenge and choosing the right foot wear for the conditions was difficult.

The under 13 girls turned our four runners and their efforts on the day paid off as they finished as second team behind a very strong squad from Birtley A.C. Millie Cassidy running from the fast pack was the first Elswick counter in 7th place and ran the third fastest time of the day, next was Robyn Bennett who ran well finishing 8th and gaining promotion to the fast pack. The next Elswick counter was Anna Channon who ran a great race from the slow pack  finishing in 15th position. Isabelle Riley made an excellent account of herself and finished well in 26th after starting in the fast pack.

In the under 17 and 20 women Elswicks Phillipa Williams made it look easy, winning the race with a fantastic two minute margin. She was backed up admirably by Rebecca Carpenter who ran confidently finishing in 5th position, and with the third fastest time on the day. Both are an absolute credit to the club, well done girls.

In the senior women’s race Alison Dargie ran a terrific race, showing she is in great form. Alison finished in 27th position running from the fast pack, ran the 4th fastest time overall on the day and was easily the fastest vet woman, leaving her on course to win first woman vet in the grand prix competition.  Jill Bennett and Julie Richardson ran bravely to greatly improve on their times from last year, finishing  98th and 101st respectively and showing great team spirit.

NEHL Wrekenton

The fourth fixture of the season was staged at Ice Station Zebra, otherwise known as Wrekenton on Saturday 11th February.

The first race of the afternoon featured the U/13 Boys with EWAN CASSIDY being our only representative running the 5th fastest time to claim 10th spot overall out of 46 finishers.

In the U/15 Boys race JOE WALKER was 13th overall with CHARLIE HOLLIDAY finishing 22nd out of 27.

The Senior Mens event had another huge field in spite of the bitter weather with 331 finishing.  The club had nine men taking part, but due to injuries and other commitments we were last overall in Division 1.

IAIN HARDY was first home in 104th place, followed by PAUL TURNER in 119th spot.

KEVIN STEPHENSON was 155th, with DAVE JARDIN 213TH.  LEE COULSON finished 233rd, and the sixth counter was PETER SLOAN in 234th place.

OTHER FINISHERS:

HARRY MATTHEWS-249TH, STEVE CURRY-281ST, and ROD RICHARDSON-315TH.

The penultimate fixture of the season will be staged at Alnwick on Saturday 3rd March and hopefully we can muster a strong squad to stave off the threat of relegation.

NECAA Road Relay Championship

A bright but bitterly cold afternoon greeted runners in the NECAA Road Relay Championship at Hetton Lyons Country Park, Hetton -Le-Hole this afternoon. During the course of the race a strong wind blew and between several snow showers the sun shone sympathetically on the waiting runners and spectators.

The Elswick women fielded a very strong Veteran team, and on form Alison Dargie ran a superb first leg to record the 6th fastest women’s time overall.  There was a welcome return to racing for Susanne Stephenson who proved to be a safe pair of hands on the second leg, handing on to Kim Matthews who ran admirably on the third leg, easily maintaining the teams second position behind Tynedale.  Yam Thiru ran a great glory leg for the squad and brought them home as second women vets’ team, a good two and a half minutes clear of third team, North Shields Poly.

In the men’s race, Elswick fielded both a senior and a vet’s team.  Kevin Stephenson ran a very solid first leg for the vets handing on to Dave Littlemore who showed he is a class act, followed by Mark McNally, Graham Bell, Martin Connelly and Lee Bennett. The team triumphed by finishing in a well-earned bronze medal position.

The Elswick senior men’s team also put in an extremely respectable performance. Paul Turner ran a very speedy first leg to hand over to Jason Clark who proved he is returning to form. It was good to see Chris Conway run so well for the club on the third leg and Harry Matthews returning from injury ran a solid fourth. The final two runners, Elswick stalwarts Dave Jardin and Steve Curry both ran superbly to bring the team home in 27th position.

All in all a highly enjoyable and successful afternoons work for the club. Support from club seniors Frank Watson and Collin Bolton was very much appreciated as always by the teams.
