NEHL Town Moor

Sunday 7th February dawned wet and steadily worsened, with the club committed to hosting the North East Harrier League fixture on the Town Moor.  As ever Elswick rallied round with the event being well marshaled, and in spite of the number of members helping out still performed creditably.  The U/13 Girls race was a triumph for PHILLIPA CHAMBERS, with JESSICA RICHARDSON in 8th spot.  ANNA BARNES was our only representative in the U/15 Girls finishing in 5th place.  In the U/17,20 Women's event PHILLIPA WILLIAMS ran second to record the 2nd fastest time.  The Senior Women's race saw the largest turn out from the club for many years, with ALISON DARGIE claiming 12th place, closely followed by JUDITH NUTT in 13th.  SARA BLIGHT was 45th, with JULIE RICHARDSON-71st.  Newcomers RACHAEL BOWIE and HELEN PURVIS ran creditably in the atrocious conditions to finish 82nd and 83rd.  Elswick were 6th team home.  Full marks to all concerned for such an excellent response from the Women.  On the male side ROBERT BARNES was 3rd in the U/13 Boys race, with ADAM WANSELL having his first run out for the club finishing 25th.  A triumph for JOE WALKER in the U/15 Boys, with JORDAN HESLOP-14th.  DANIEL BALMAIN turned out as ever to claim 5th spot in the U/17 Mens event.  Another great effort from the Senior Men, with DAVE APPELBY holding pride of place finishing-15th, followed by ANDY NIVEN-18TH, with a great effort by DAVE JARDIN who ran strongly to claim 26th place.  Other Finishers: PAUL TURNER-42ND, IAN FENWICK-72ND, ANDREW HARTLEY-151ST, PHIL BARNES-194TH, STEVE CURRY-198TH, ROB WILSON-236th, and JEFF EMMERSON-246TH.  Once again the club rose to the challenge of staging this fixture with the assistance of Tony and Norman from the City Council.

The Signal Relays

The Signals Relays were staged again at Hetton Lyons Country Park which is proving a popular home for this event.  The highlight of the day for the club was the Bronze medal the Senior Men gained with an outstanding performance from PHIL HURST who recorded the fastest time of the day in scorching round the two lap course of 2.22 miles in 10:16. PAUL TURNER ran an excellent first leg in 11.46, to hand over to Phil who pulled the team up to second spot.  KEVIN STEPHENSON ran the third leg in 12:33 ,handing over to LEE BENNETT-12:17, IAN FENWICK recorded 13:06 on Leg 5, before ANDY NIVEN on his debut for the club ran 12:44 to bring the club through to third spot.

Good to see two Women's teams with the first team of YAM THIRU-13:43, ALISON DARGIE-13:23, PHILLIPA WILLIAMS-14:57, and SARA BLIGHT-16:17 running well to gain 5th spot. In the second squad DEENA WHITE ran 15:54, KIM MATTHEWS-18:54, JILL BENNETT-19:01, and CHRISTINE LEE-18:34.  It must be emphasized that some of these times are open to doubt!

Elswick at Alton Towers

Elswick were represented at Alton Towers in the English National Cross Country Championships.  Conditions could be described as demanding? The event was almost called off due to the cloying mud that enveloped the whole course.  This proved particularly disappointing to PHIL HURST who traveled to the Midlands with high hopes, but his dreams vanished in the mud, struggling home in 16th spot, which was still a creditable performance in the circumstances.  Five seniors fought their way through the conditions which by the time of the Senior Race resembled the Somme.  KEVIN STEPHENSON-362ND, DAVE JARDIN-651ST, TOM HANSON-1027, PETER SLOAN-1069, and ROB WILSON-1219TH.

In the Winter Indoor League at the Monkton Stadium JESSICA RICHARDSON gained a very creditable third place in the U/15 Girls placing's.
