The club needs the members help to assist with the transport of the club tent to local venues for the cross country season. ANYONE CAN HELP.

Here is the tent rota & THE VENUES FOR THE 2016 / 2017 season > tent-rota-2016-17-ver-2

A hard copy in which you can ‘sign up to’ will be displayed on the noticeboard inside the sports hall. Thank you!

Below is some helpful tips & advice:

ALWAYS wear your official club vest at each race. You will be disqualified for that race and any points obtained will be removed from the teams score.

PLEASE RETAIN YOUR ALLOCATED RACE NUMBER FOR THE ENTIRE NEHL SEASON.

At the start of the season (usually late September) collect your race number in the sports hall on training evenings (or by prior arrangement with Tom Hanson, Dave Jardin Lalage Brown, Gina Cappoci or Graham Bell). These are free of charge. However: The replacement cost is £3 and shall be paid by the club member.

TIMINGS. Try to be at each event 45 mins before your race start time. It allows time to change, view the course and warm up. Timings are approximate. DO LISTEN FOR THE WHISTLE 5 MINS PRIOR TO YOUR RACE!

If you are not sure just ask! Frank Watson, Dave Jardin, Lalage Brown, Graham Bell, Gina Capocci, or any of the junior coaching staff. Please do chat to one of the many seasoned club members: they will gladly offer advice and keep you right 🙂

Car share where possible. Car-parking is often a walk away so allow 10 mins to walk to the venue.

Look out for the BIG RED ELSWICK HARRIERS club tent. You can’t miss it! The club sends out information before an event. Info is usually published on the clubs website, noticeboard, Facebook & Twitter accounts. We also send text messages &  good old fashioned word of mouth.

ITEMS TO TAKE. Safety pins for your race number.

Appropriate footwear, XC trainers, fell shoes with grippy lugs on the soles or ‘spike’ shoes (with 6 to 12 mm spikes for grip), a change of any warm clothing, a change of footwear.

Under the club vest some junior & senior runners where a thermal long sleeve top. If bitterly cold you can wear hat & gloves.

There is either limited or NO refreshments provisions, so please do bring your own drinks & food.

A poly bag for your dirty running gear? Consider wellies and warm clothing if spectating: it gets cold and clarty!

Background. The North-East Harrier league (NEHL) is our local cross-county (XC) league and has been going for over 100 years. The women’s and junior races are more recent inventions. The races take place in various locations, with varied terrain of parkland and reclaimed sites. The XC season runs from late September through to March. In addition the club will enter athletes in the North Eastern Counties & National Championships. In addition there are the school XC champs culminating in the English Schools XC  championships in March. The club plans training around these races. The NEHL is a competition with league tables and clubs can be promoted and relegated, so it is certainly something to run and compete in!

Marcus Byron

Attn Mark Carpenter. Hi – I’ve read your ‘Beginners Guide to Cross Country’ article on your club website, which I found interesting, as we (Tynedale) have been talking about putting together a small pack or factsheet to try and demystify the Harrier League and encourage a few more folk along – especially juniors. I hope you don’t mind if I crib some of what you’ve written and by return I wondered whether you’d be interested in copies of a set of maps I produced for each venue, showing the location and approx course route. Email me if so. Best wishes, Marcus
