About us

Elswick Harriers are proud of their tradition of being the oldest established club in the North East of England, founded in 1889. Over the years we have discovered many successful athletes including three Olympians: Mike Mcleod, Alan Lillington and Alex Burns.

We are based at Newburn Activity Centre, Grange Road, Newcastle Upon Tyne. The centre is situated on the edge of the Tyne Riverside Country Park and offers superb opportunities for road, off road and cross country training in a great environment.

We pride ourselves on being a competitive and friendly club. Our training sessions are held at Newburn Activity Centre on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, meeting at 7.00pm in the sports hall for a prompt 7.15pm start. For the Senior Squad, a total warm up / training session / warm down usually takes between 45 and an hour. There are various group training sessions with coaches available at all training sessions.

Some members also meet informally on Sunday mornings for a longer run (9 a.m. gathering outside the leisure centre entrance). These runs typically last around 60 mins 90 mins at an easy run pace: sometimes a bit less, sometimes a bit more! You choose your pace and distance.

The Junior squads have varied training timings: leaving the centre at 7.15pm. Sessions last anywhere between 45 mins and an hour.

If you are thinking about getting into running or if you are an established runner but have not joined a club, why not come along to one of our training nights?

Members compete in a very wide range of athletic activities throughout the year. In addition to popular mass events such as London Marathon and Great North Run; individuals and club teams participate in all the local, regional and national competitions.

Members compete at track & field and cross country competitions  in junior, senior and veteran categories.

The club also organises its own races the, Good Friday Relays at Easter, the Newburn River Run ( 6 miles ) in June and the Norman Woodcock Memorial Race ( 3 person team relay – 1.66 miles per leg) in November or December.

Some athletes compete in fell and trail running, du and triathlon competition. For further information contact our Club Secretary, contact details are on the front page of the club’s home page. Alternatively have a peruse of the tab headings on the club’s website. Thank you.

Hi my daughter 7 year old is asking about running clubs for her to join? Do you keep the kids of her age on the track as I wouldn’t be comfortable her running out of the ct grounds or would you have any suggestions of where is best for something like that thankyou Lisa

Graham Bell

Hello Lisa. Elswick Harriers do not enrol to the club, relatively young Juniors (aged 7) for running sessions. Best Regards, Graham Bell – men’s captain.

Graham Bell

Good Morning Graham. I’m pleased your club team runners enjoy the cold conditions! and the new format on Saturday. Comments like this make it ‘definitely worthwhile’. We look forward to next year and hopefully even more teams to the event. Best Regards, Graham Bell (Men’s Captain). (Results & Report on Our website today & results to Sports soft later today).
