After winter training Elswick’s Alex Goodhall was back in the UK, competing in the Under 20’s 800m at the England Athletics Indoor Age Group Championships at the English Institute for Sport in Sheffield on February 24th & 25th 2018: Words by his mum Susan:
Four heats took place on Saturday 24th with heat winners and the two fastest losers to qualify for the final, and Alex was in the last of them. He had the fastest PB of the six starters but two of the other competitors had run faster than him in 2018, as had all the qualifiers in the previous three heats. Alex decided to lead the race out to improve his chances of winning or getting a fast enough time to qualify.
Alex led pretty much from gun to tape to win the heat in 1:54.82, just outside his 2018 best of 1:54.71. The final on Sunday 25th was a tactical affair with the first two laps run in a modest 1 minute. With two laps to go the eventual winner upped the pace. Alex went after him and was in second place at the bell. However, he couldn’t hold his position and was overtaken on the back straight of the final lap.
Though fourth is kind of the worst place to finish, he took a lot of confidence and motivation from the weekend and will be training hard for the start of the outdoor season in April. Below is a photo of Alex, (leading in the heat). Thank you to Fotoccompli.com for the photograph.
