First up the Leeds Abbey Dash 10km Road Race:
The English 10km road race championships that are entwined with the popular Leeds Abbey Dash took place yesterday, amid inclement weather conditions. 10,000! athletes packed out a class field with some exceptional talent in amongst. Slightly nervous, but in a good way, Phil was quietly confident. From the gun the pace was quick and Phil was in the front pack with some notable top athletes behind him (Nick Swinburn and Matty Haynes, both in England vests…….)
As the pace intensified for the last 5km, the eventual podium finishers attempted to pull away from the rest of the field. With the pace well under sub 30 the last kilometre saw the top three competitors edge away. Five seconds separated the top three runners. First from Scotland, Andrew Butchart in 29.17. In second, Callum Hawkins also from Scotland, finishing in 29.21. In third place overall Elswick’s Phil Hurst in 29.22. 1st and 2nd gents were from Scotland so it was Phil who took the English Road Race Championship title!
Not only that Phil Pb’d his 5km, 5 mile and 10km times. A truly great result for Phil. Team Elswick should be justifiably proud of this achievement! Under the masterful guidance of Martin Crowe, Phil is looking to the indoor season of Jan / Feb of 2015. Thanks must also go to his coach, Martin Crowe for getting Phil into excellent form. I’m sure there is more to come from Phil.
Also competing at Leeds and all returning from recent injury: Mark McLeod, Paul Turner, Mark Turnbull and Steve Robertson. Times: 34.17, 33.50, 37.07, 38.39 respectively. All in all a great effort by the lads in the Red vest of Elswick.
The day before over in Brampton, saw Tadele take on the competition at the 10 mile road race that is Brampton to Carlisle. Almost as a prequel to what was to happen on Sunday in Leeds, Tadele took hold of the opposition and won in a very comfortable style and manner 1st place was assured, with a podium and a finishing time of 49 mins and 48 secs . Yet another fine performance, especially so when you consider Tadele ran the race almost on his own. Congratulations Tadele on a fine, fine performance.
For the ladies, Marie Drowzodicz ran on behalf of the ladies finishing with a time of 78mins and 07secs. Well done on a fine run from Marie. Also on Sunday and competing in the Mediterranean (Spain, Valencia) was our very own Euopean Marathon Sun Seeker, XC Captain David Jardin. His training must be going well as he completed the 42.2kms in a very respectable time of 3 hrs and 15 mins. A report I believe is to follow. Cheers, GB.
Please congratulate the men and women of Elswick, the next time you see them at the club. Once again, they have all done the club proud.
