A glorious warm sunny evening awaited runners at this year’s Newburn River Run. This popular race amongst our local running community brought together some quality athletes from the North East. This was supported by a good number of un-attached runners taking part giving the race the highest number of finishers ever. At 7.30pm the whistle blew and the race was off! Morpeth Harriers had a strong contingent and delivered a good race at the front of the field.
Matty Nicholson had built up an un-assailable lead coming into the final mile of the course. Over Newburn Bridge along Grange Road and through the finish line, to break the tape in an impressive time of 34.06. In 2nd place was the resurgent and in-form Marc Fenwick of Tyne Bridge Harriers. Marc posted a time of 34.22. Morpeth’s Nick Swinburn completed the podium in 3rd place with a time of 34.34. First Vet home and 5th overall was our very own and in-form Lee Bennett with an impressive time of 36.03, winning the Jimmy Bell veterans trophy for the second year running. Phil Sanderson was 6th in 36:43. Mark McNally (1st V60) also in good form for Elswick had a fine run in 66th place with a time of 43.08.
The womens competition was won by Alyson Dixon of Sunderland Strollers. Alyson had a magnificent run, breaking the female course record which had stood for 20 years. Alyson broke the tape in an excellent time of 36.02.Taking 1:40 off the previous time. Alyson had never run the race before, so thankfully Lee Bennett kindly pointed out ‘the lefts and rights’ during the race!

Good Club runners packed out the majority of the results table. It was great to see so many out there on the course battling for position. The spectators gave encouragement to everyone on both sides of the river. Our un-attached competitors acquitted themselves admirably under the warm conditions. Back at HQ volunteers handed out gratefully accepted water supplies, runners basking in the evening sunshine, reflecting on their own personal race. Fine banter ensued, the post race suppers ably devoured in the function room….All washed down with a well deserved shandy!
Our thanks go out to everyone who supported the evening: The race sponsors Howdens Joinery, runners, officials and ALL the volunteers who made it such a great night for the club. Lets look forward now to next year, when it will be the club’s 125 year anniversary. See you in 2014! GB/FW/JB
