The Newburn River Run. Wed 12th June 2019.

A hardy, determined gathering of Club & Unattached athletes to took the start line (in atrocious conditions) for the 6 mile 2019 Newburn River Run (I’m sure we organised it for June, not January!).

Given the event was only 3 days after the Blaydon Road Race, it was very pleasing to see athletes take to our start line in this anniversary year.

At 7.15 pm the race was underway. Athletes made their way around the course, the outward leg of the course gave some shelter from the weather, the return leg and the last 3 miles gave runners an ideal opportunity to practice their Cross Country skills! Thankfully the paths just about held out for the athletes as they made speed towards the finish line by the Newcastle University Rowing Club.

Blackhill Bounder Jordan Bell on his way to victory

Taking the 2019 title and the Colin Bolton Trophy was Blackhill Bounders Jordan Bell in 31.54 (pictured above). First female athlete and the winner of the Hazel Simpson trophy was Un-attached athlete Maria Caterall with a time of 40.16 (pictured below).

Congratulations to both winners. The team prizes both went to Elswick Harriers. Congratulations to both teams.

Above Jordan Bell with the Colin Bolton Trophy. There were 1st 2nd & 3rd prizes for all age group athlete categories V35 / V40 / V50 and V60. Darren Purvis retained the Jimmy Bell trophy.

Team Winners Elswick’s Jason Old and Andrew Ball

Team winners Cath Lowes and Andrea Banner (Centre Frank Watson).

Ladies team winners Cath Lowes and Andrea Banner, with our very own Frank Watson.

Very well to done all athletes.

Also at the finish line there were several spot prizes given out. Supper packs and a free 130 year anniversary finishers t-shirt completed the package of event prizes and awards.

Time to say THANK YOU! First to the participants: You were all superb competitors, given the terrible weather encountered.

Next, all of the Club volunteers and marshals who helped on the day. Again, given the weather, Elwsick’s running club and its team of dedicated individuals once again proved how well, the Club of Elswick Harriers hosts an event. Thank you to all of the event officials, the Leisure Centre Staff and to the Newcastle University Rowing Club for their help. All Magnificent.

An extra special thank you to the team of Harry, Michelle, Noel, Laura, Tom, Derek, Val, Frank, Keith, Iain and Les. Without question you made the difference and you made it happen.

Hello Stephen, Pleased to read that you enjoyed the 2019 River Run. Certainly the rain may I say “added to the occasion!”. Looking forward to seeing more athletes from Elvet Striders in 2020. See you all then! Regards, Graham Bell (event organiser).
