A busy weekend of racing for the adults as well as the juniors of Elswick.
On Sunday was the Sunderland Strollers’ Pier to Pier race; a scenic coastal race of seven miles starting on the beach at South Shields Pier along the cliff paths past Marsden Rock and Souter Lighthouse finishing at Roker Pier in Sunderland.
An impressive turnout again from Elswick Harriers with some runners having raced the previous Wednesday at the Clive Cookson 10K. The Pier to Pier was blessed with blue skies and sunshine, so relatively hot conditions for the runners, but they were rewarded with great race times and a super goody bag at the end including a race t-shirt, water bottle and a beer.
Nineteen Elswick Harriers took part with two podium finishes. Club Chairman Harry Matthews finished in second place in the V70 race in a time of 56.38, and Jude Nutt won the V40 race in 45.10, was first female and veteran and came in third place overall in the women’s race. The Bunny Counters were well represented. Dionne Milburn comfortably completed the race which was one of her first races for Elswick. This was a great achievement and another success for coach Les.
The race was won by Liam Taylor who appears from the results to be an unattached runner. He finished in 38.24 followed by Luke Adams of South Shields Harriers in 38.30 and Jack Brown of Jarrow & Hebburn in 38.36. Our first man home was Jason Old in 43.40, 31st overall and 5th in the M40 group. The first two women were from Jesmond Joggers, Molly Pace in 44.37 and Laura Cheetham in 44.49, but not far ahead of our veteran Jude Nutt.
Here are a few snaps taken by Mary Lisle and the list of results for the Elswick competitors.
Jason Old looking fresh legged after the Clive Cookson and clearly having a lovely time on the beach.
Tracey Watson (Redhead) – great running from the Bunny Crew
Jeffery Emmerson – finding time to race in between looking after his grandchildren. Good to see him in his Elswick vest again.
Ben Hall – getting back to form. Second race of the week.

Track and Field News
On the same day there was also the first fixture of the Track and Field season, held at York University Sports Centre. A long way to travel and also set amongst a busy period of racing, it was difficult to organise a team from Elswick. But flying the flag for Elswick was our Track and Field Captain Cath Lowes. She went along with members of our partner club Blaydon Harriers and competed in several events. The word is that she performed extremely well in her track events and ran some of her best times – not surprising given her current rate of improvement. Well done Cath on representing our club at this event and congratulations on pulling off some of your best times.
Look out on Facebook for further posts from Cath regarding the next three fixtures. Hopefully we can can organise a more extensive team at the further events.
