Junior North Eastern County Athletics Championships

Thank you to Kerrie for the race report and photos.

Elswick’s Poppy Old earns a well deserved 3rd place

It was great to see some of our junior girls competing in the North Eastern County Athletics Championships held in Middlesbrough over the weekend. This is a big event in the Athletics calendar and attracts a large number of athletes from all over the North East.

The girls ran their hearts out, showing great determination and support for one another. On the first day of the championships the first race for the Elswick juniors was the Under 13 girls 800m with 15 athletes racing in total. This meant the girls had to double up in lanes, which they coped tremendously with. Poppy Old secured a podium spot coming 3rd.

Lucy Milburn had a great race gaining a 4th place spot and Poppy Wilde, running up into this age group for the first time raced superbly, securing 9th place: all gained PB’s. Caitlin Flanagan ran in the Under 15 girls 800m, moving up an age group this season too. It was a straight final with again, a large number of athletes racing. Caitlin ran herself into 9th place with a very strong finish.

On the same day Lucy Milburn also qualified for the 200m final. Fantastic sprinting. On Sunday it was the 1500m. Our Under 13 girls ran gutsy performances in this race. Poppy Old having never ran the 1500m before came 2nd, securing another podium spot. Poppy Wilde, having only run this distance once before gave it her all with a fantastic, determined finish running herself into a well deserved 5th place.

The under 15 girls 1500m was split into 2 heats and Caitlin Flanagan ran a great race. Lucy Milburn also competed in the Under 13 girls 100m and just narrowly missed out on the final. The girls showed great team spirit throughout the weekend and raced so well. Very proud of you all. Well done!
