Gordon Smith Relays 08/05/2019

Our three ladies teams were magnificent, still smiling in spite of the battles to juggle work and family commitments, to get through the rush hour traffic and to stay warm in the torrential downpours and wind.  From left to right we have club hero supporter Colin Bolton,  Joanne Brown, Debbs Wilmott, Amy Brown, Bella Arnott, Cath Lowes, Andrea Banner and super stand-in Sara Blight.

Our first team got off to a great start with Joanne Brown finishing in 13.01.    In support was Andrea Banner finishing in 13.27.  Cath had an amazing final leg in 12.37 to bring the team home in 10th position behind some highly competitive teams.  Our second team was lead by Susanne Stephenson, running well after her fine performance at Bedewell relays the previous week in 14.13.  Next was Sara Blight, stepping up to the challenge at the very last minute with a finishing time of 13.37.  That’s two consecutive weeks when Sara has stepped in to reinforce the team in a relay competition.  We salute you Sara.  Absolutely storming finish for this team by Bella Arnott in 13.29.  No sign of any injuries at these relays which is fantastic news.  Our next team was lead by stalwart Yvonne Swinhoe.  Nothing can deter her.  She finished in 14.47 and inspired her number two runner, Debbs Wilmott in her relay debut to run her fastest ever 2 miles.  Amazing Amy Brown completed the trio in 15.12, and improved her performance from last year by over 20 seconds.  No wonder there were smiles all round.

Despite the traffic around the city and the adverse weather conditions the flying Elswick men were able to field 5 teams at the Gordon Smith Relays hosted by Wallsend Harriers at West Allotment Country Park on Wednesday 8th May 2019.

Team A finished 10th with Veteran Steve Roberton 11.20 running a course PB whilst Andrew Ball and Andrew Bell ran 10.55 and 10.33 respectively which is pretty awesome.

Team B finished 40th which was led by inspiring Martin Connelly 12.08 with Luke Hilliard making his relay debut 13.04 this was however down to timing issues as he actually ran 11.40 ish, Mike Russell 12.29 was promoted to this team on the back of some fine performances of late.

Team C finished 31st, not knowing how I (Richard Houghton) would cope after 2 marathons I felt it was right to run in group 3, however I pleasantly surprised myself 11.43, next up was Lee Coulson who ran a superb second leg in 12.11, that gent has really been impressive and long may it continue. Third up was the committed and dedicated Shaun Connelly 12.40 who is a bundle of joy.

Team D saw Robert Lambert 13.40 ran his fastest 1 mile and 2 mile distances of the year, Robert Emson 12.49 ran superbly after running the London marathon on the 28th April. These were huge positives for these 2 runners whose team was incomplete.

Team E consisted of Stephen Curry 15.21 and Micky Shore 13.42 who showed great spirit after learning shortly prior to the race team E would be incomplete. Both again ran brilliantly on this wet evening.

A huge thank you goes out to all involved for your dedication and commitment that you demonstrated. Club Coaches Ian and Colin also showed their superb support as always for all Elswick Ladies and Men

Weetslade relays are up next on Wednesday 19th June with a 7.30pm start time at Lockey Park in Wideopen. If you have not seen the facebook post from Scott Brady and would like to run please comment below.
