On the first day of Autumn we kicked off with the first cross country of the season.The weather was really warm not like the rain and mud we normally expect for XC.The event was very well organised by Sunderland Harriers who have been hosting this event for 36 years.This year the name has been changed in honour of Ken Jefferson a Sunderland Harriers coach who passed away earlier this year. We had a good show for this opening race of the XC season .
The first race was the for the under 11s we only had one boy, Sam Allison who came first in a time of 3.53. The Under 11 Girls had 7 Elswick runners Poppy Wilde 1st 4.10 Erin Blight 5th 4.34 Zoe Fielding 12th 4.59 Lola Wood 17th 5.09 Louisa Hamilton 18th and Evie Reed 19th both 5.13 Keira Bairstow 22nd 5.44. Under 13 Girls had 4 Elswick runners Caitlin Flanagan 4th 12.09 Lucy Milburn 8th 13.12 Bella Russell 18th 14.19 Kodi Norman 23rd 14.50. Under 15 Girls Charley Lee 15th 12.55 Aimee Bairstow 22nd 14.07. Under 17 Girls Suzannah Fielding 4th 11.31 Hannah Tumia 5th 11.32 Kerry-Anne Simpson 9th 13.12. Well done to Team Elswick juniors you were all great no matter where you finished and thank you to all the support from parents. Looking forward to seeing you all on the 29th for the first Harrier League at Wrekenton on the 29th September.

The women’s senior race: Elswick’s A team of Felicity Smith, Amy Brown and new member Venetia Johnson were placed a very creditable 9th place. The Vet’s ladies team of Sara Blight, Gillian Spendiff and Lindsey Grant had a fine team run, placing 5th in their race.
The men’s relays: Elswick’s A Team of Mark McNally Harry Matthews, Peter Sloan and Graham Leslie were placed 19th. The composite Senior Men’s Team were placed 14th with team members Richard Houghton, John Bell, Dave Armstrong and Iain Hardy in the quartet. Well done to all of the athletes on Saturday afternoon.
