Elswick Harriers, Mike Avery.

It is with a sad heart we announce the death of Mike Avery. An Elswick Harrier.  The athlete, a former club president and coach.

Mike passed away on Saturday 21st April. Mike was 79. Mike will be dearly missed by his wife Mary (also a club legend who amongst many personal achievements, won the 25 km Veteran Commonwealth games in 1986).

Mike and Mary were married for 58 years. They have three daughters Yvonne , Barbara and Elaine. The family have seven grandchildren.

Mike goes a long way back in the history of Elswick Harriers. His father Clem, was also a club member before the war.

Over previous years, a ladies section had tried to form. It was not until 1979 that the ladies section really took off.

Mike will be remembered for his coaching ability, training boys and girls of the junior section of the club, with considerable achievement.

Mike developed the athletes, which resulted in many successes in school competitions, Inter County & National titles.

Mike’s athletes are still running today and  some of their children, are members of the club.

All of the above, is a testament and lasting legacy from Mike: and the ‘belonging’ to the Elswick Harrier family . Mike was indeed – an Elswick Harrier legend.

You will be sadly missed by those who knew you. May you rest in peace.

Ken & Jan Heslop.

(On behalf of Elswick Harriers).

A very fitting tribute by Jan and Ken.
I had much respect for Mike over many years. Mary was also an Elswick legend through her running career. Kim and I send our deepest sympathy to Mary and the family.

So sad to hear about Mike passing away. I was lucky enough to be coached by Mike in my early years running days. I would not have achieved half of what I did without his guidance. Love to all the family.
