Remember When. 1989!Club Centenary.Metro Radio Saltwell Harriers Road Race. The Co-op! Elswick’s Rippon Hall

Back in 1989: The Club’s centenary year. Elswick Harriers pulled out the stops, as guest of honour was Seb Coe. A multiple, Olympic,world champion and world recorder holder in the middle distance track events. Also guest of honour, Elswick’s Olympian and Silver Medalist Mike McLeod.

The year 1996. Centre, Dave Harrod from Elswick. Right? Guess who: Gothenburg 1995. Triple Jump. World Champion and current world record holder……. A very young Jonathan Edwards.

In 1889 The Metro Radio / Saltwell Harriers 10 km was held. Once again Elswick’s Silver medal Olympian Mike McLeod won the event in 29.43. Look at the top 20 times: 20th would arguable win a local 10 km today? 3rd Senior Team. 1st Men’s Vets Team. 180 senior men took part: 167 vet men, 39 in the boys race, 22 in the youths boys race, and 19 in the senior women and combined vet race.

To round things off: A gentlemen and fellow Elswick Harrier Rippon Hall. His name was metioned at the club presentation evening. A life honorary member. Here he is, Rippon Hall (centre in the ‘red vest &  diamond’ of Elswick) the athlete in action.
