Well done to all Elswick Athletes who ran yesterday’s Great North Run. A grand day for the North East which brought to an end 80 days of the Great Exhibition of the North. Over 43,000 finishers, a record for the event, which was first held on 28th June 1981, when 12,000 runners took to the start line. In that first year, Elswick’s Olympic Athlete Mike McLeod won the event and repeated this achievement the following year. Yesterdays run saw Mo Farah win the men’s race, Kenya’s Vivien Cheruiyot won the ladies race. England’s David Weir won the men’s wheelchair race and Poland’s Martyna Snopek won the ladies wheelchair race. There were probably a few more? runners from our club who had charity numbers (our apologies if your name is not here). Well done to those runners for running for your chosen charity.
