Month: August 2018
It’s been a glorious summer of sunny weather, Elswick nuptials, and mid-week races, but the autumn beckons and with it the start of the new cross country season.
The harrier league consists of 6 races plus a “cup” event. Once registered, you will be given a number which you wear at each of the events.
The season commences at Wrekenton on Saturday 29 September. If you wish to take part please let Steven Robertson (male entries) and Andrea Banner (female entries) know either in person or by responding to their posts on the Elswick Facebook page.
If you are brand new to the club, can you also message Steven or Andrea directly with your date of birth.
For full details of the harrier league check out the Start Fitness North East Harrier league website. For reference, the fixture dates, including the North Eastern Championships are looking like this:
09/10/18 Druridge Bay
27/10/18 Sherman Cup/Davison Shield
17/11/18 Aykley Heads
08/12/18 North Eastern Championships, Wrekenton
Jan 2019 to be confirmed
09/02/19 Thornley Hall Farm
02/03/19 Alnwick Castle
For the early fixtures, you will manage the courses wearing normal trainers or trail shoes. As the weather gets colder and wetter, cross country spikes are recommended.
We already have lots of members who are new to cross country asking to be registered for the new season which is great news. The more runners we have out at any given course, the better the team will perform. There’s always a great team spirit at these events with lots of support and cake at the end. Even if you can only commit to one of the fixtures, it’s worth registering your name. There’s also an internal club championship which will be based on the results recorded at the harrier league events.
Looking forward to seeing lots of red Elswick vests out during the 2018/19 cross country season.
Thank you to Rob Emson for the write up. Enjoy the read.
Elswick Harriers 10 mile handicap race. Sunday 19th August 2018.
There are many moments that epitomise the kindred spirit of Elswick and there was another one this Sunday gone. This event was all down to those organising it giving up their time for the sake of other club members. Staged as a pre Great North Run training run with the added fun of being handicapped, it was perfect timing and distance to help those with places gain that vital bit of confidence ahead of the biggest half marathon in the world. Tom set it up as a 5 mile out from the Centre towards Prudhoe and back again with runners setting off at 5 minute intervals according to pace………. On Saturday August 18th 2018, John Eric Lowes and Catherine Lee were married in the beautiful surroundings of Great Langdale in the heart of the Lake District.
A gathering of 120 family & friends joined Jonny and Cath for their special day. It was truly a superb day. From the magnificent mountainous backdrop – to the wonderfully decked out Tipii Tents (with hundreds of race numbers & so many memorable photographs!) housing the ceremony, reception, post wedding buffet & the fantastic live music…..Even the weather did not deter this spirited crowd! You could argue it added to the occasion. All four speeches were heartfelt and at times very funny indeed! Mr & Mrs Lowes are to honeymoon in the Italian towns of Sorrento and Naples.
On behalf of those Elswick Harriers who were in attendance, a sincere ‘thank you’ to both families for letting us to share your special day.
Congratulations to Jonny and Catherine. Very Best Regards, Graham.

It was a successful Sunday morning for team Elswick at the Gosforth Summer Relays!
They day began at 10am with the 1 mile juniors race where we had Poppy Old finishing 1st in the under 12’s category and Bella Russell coming home in 3rd in the same category. Great running girls!
The Senior/Vet event covered 2 miles on each of the 3 legs and we had 3 Elswick teams taking part. Tyne Bridge Harriers were first across the line with Tom Charlton also running the fastest leg of the day. Elswick success came when Jason Old, Steven Robertson and Andrew Ball finished in 3rd place overall and 1st Veteran team. Winning ways continued with Joanne Brown, Kerrie Old and Andrea Banner taking 1st place in the Veteran ladies category. Richard Houghton, Graham Leslie and Steve Curry made up the 3rd Elswick team crossing the line in 21st place. Very well done to everyone on what was a pretty hot Sunday morning!
Senior sessions this week are as follows…………..
Tuesday 7th: 3 x Station Bank (or 5 x shorter efforts on Station Bank for anyone not fancying the full hill)
Thursday 9th: 8 x 2 mins (1 min recovery) at Warburtons
