Team Elswick Juniors at the first NEYDL T&F Meet

Report By Ken Heslop:

What did they say in the film the Field Of Dreams ‘build it and they will come’ well, Judith certainly did that. After a few anxious weeks in preparation, the first NEYDL with Elswick Harriers first involvement for a few years. it’s fair to say there was one or two hiccups, but as we have stated all along, this is a starting point and learning curve for all concerned: the athletes, coaches  parents & guardians. The event took place at Whitley Bay home of North Shields Poly.

The weather conditions were not to bad considering we were down the coast in April. Having said, that there was a strong headwind on the back straight of the track. There were too many Elswick Juniors to name individually – a great turnout, so thank you for competing. However it was fantastic to watch Elswick athletes racing on the track or doing long jump or javelin etc. We were a joint team with South Shields who unfortunately were a little down in numbers as they were also hosting there own race that day. Together as a combined team – the team gave their very best on the day……. It’s fair to say the team had stern competition, at least three clubs have their own track. The final standings were as follows: Gateshead 637.5   Blyth/Alnwick. 584.5. Tynedale 557 Wallsend/Gosforth. 447.5. Jarrow/Hebburn. 319  South Shields/Elswick   284.5. A great start to the series. The next event is on the Sunday 20th May at Jarrow.  Hopefully we will see the same athletes competing and more. Everyone enjoyed the day: If you speak to any one of your running friends,  I am sure you will find they would say, that they had, a thoroughly enjoyable track & field experience.
