Alex Goodhall: Elswick’s Athlete in Belgium. A summer update.

Words and photo by Alex’s mum: Alex’s outdoor season has now come to a close. Alex did get the chance to run in the Elswick vest this summer.

While he was at an athletics camp at Loughborough University, he had the chance to run in the Charnwood A.C. Open on the Loughborough track on August 9th. He ran the 800m and won quite comfortably in 1:58.27. Unfortunately, I don’t have a photo to share!

Over here in Belgium, he set a new 400m PB of 50.14 on June 4th at Braine l’Alleud just south of Brussels.

Since then he’s been struggling a bit for form. He did, however, run the Belgian Senior 4 x 800m championships at Lier, near Antwerp, with some of his older club mates on September 3rd and the White Star team took home the bronze medal with a time of 7:49.01 (photo below – Alex is wearing number 64).

Bronze team medallists. Well done Alex and to the team!

Since then, unfortunately, a muscle tear sustained in training put paid to his participation in the Belgian Junior Championships and ended his outdoor season. So we’re now trying to get him fit for the school XC season and next year. Alex plans to keep running for Elswick next year and has his sights sets on representing the club at the U20 age group championships both indoor and out in 2018 (while also passing his A levels!).

Editors Note: Congratulations on a successful season Alex, managing top athletic performances with school work is no mean feat. We look forward to your Elswick & White Star endeavours in 2018.

Elswicks Robyn Bennett, representing Prudhoe High School claimed victory in the senior girls year 12/13 race. The race, over 8km was a tough test of fell running skills and Robyn led the race pretty much from the off. She received her medal from Fell running super star Victoria Wilkinson.

Elswick’s Run-Talk Initiative

Thank you to Christiane James, Keith Batey & Emma Simblett for organising & hosting a successful Run-Talk evening for club & non-club runners. Words by Christiane James: The Talk Run event organised by Keith Batey, Emma Sim and myself with Elswick Harriers support, on Thursday 7th September was very successful. In spite of a persistently heavy rain more than 23 people participated. They ran from Newburn activity centre to Blaney Row and then back to the centre via the riverside path and the Boathouse pub. Then some of us went on to The Keelman pub to continue chatting.
The objective of the event was to encourage the participants in sharing their concerns with fellow runners and in doing so highlighting the benefits of physical activities regarding mental health and wellbeing.
We would like to say that we did achieve this objective as once the Run was over, the Chat continued, thanks to social media, and some of our members felt then that they could open up about their concerns. As a result it allowed other Elswick Harriers members to give support and encouragements. Thank you all for your support.
