Results

To be considered for the club championship, you have to compete in 4 of the 6 qualifying races, and there must be one from each category, Long, Medium, Short and any other.

This year the series will again consist of six races of which a competitor’s best four results will count.  The results will be calculated on the following basis - 1st 52 points, 2nd 49 points, 3rd 48 points and then 50th 1 point, in each category:

Thanks to everyone who took part in the 2011 Club Championship race series. These results are provisional and I have calculated them by adding up each runners 4 best scores, to include a short, a medium and a long race( as specified ) plus a score from any other distance.

The Senior men's title goes once again to Ian Fenwick, who ran all six Championship races, giving him the edge on new boy Jason Clark who he beat by only one point. Lee Coulson also gave it a good stab and finished in third spot and completed five races.

The veteran men's category was won by Lee Bennett, who gained top points in four races, followed by club stalwart Dave Jardin, and a very solid performance by Peter Sloan who grabbed third spot. Stevie Curry finished strongly in fourth after completing five out of six races.

The Senior women's Championship was won by Vanessa Mcguigan who made a welcome return to the club this year and has impressed with her show of good form. It was disappointing that only myself and Vanessa completed the requisite number of races, multiple factors played a part in this.

The Veteran women's Championship was won by Kim Matthews who  ran consistently well, gaining top points in two out of four races. Tina McIver who only joined the club at the beginning of last summer has made her mark on the competition finishing strongly in second place. Followed by Elizabeth Pallister in third. It would seem Elswicks V50 women are coming through nicely at the moment.

The inclusion of the Newcastle Parkrun meant that points for that particular event were well spread out within the club and sadly many runners who gained Parkrun points took no further part in the championship. Please consider any races you would like to be included in our 2012 Championship. They must be local, affordable and achievable for all of our members. I am also happy to hear your feedback on the 2011 Championship. I would hope that the 2012 races will be announced in the next few weeks and that they will be spread throughout the year to allow members to deal with injuries, holidays etc. I am sure there is no perfect way of deciding a club championship, but believe that this one was well publicised to members allowing as many people the opportunity to take part as possible. The moto being’ you’ve got to be in it to win it.’

Elswick Harriers Club Championship 2011

This photo is credited as being taken in 1902 and shows the trophy we still use for club champion.

Looks like a Victorian pub and the trophy was donated by Mr. McConnachie (landlord of the Grey Bull at the bottom of Stanhope St) the club's second home.

Thanks to Dave Jardin for help with Parkrun times...its really stirred up some enthusiasm.

When working out the women's results it became clear that it would be far better to change the vet category to v40, otherwise we were only going to have 2 senior women, therefore Senior women now goes up to 40.  This is more in line with the feedback we got from the women runners, hope no one is offended by this.
